Venice is made up of 5 different Islands: Lido, Murano, Burano, Torcello and Isola di San Michele. We stayed on Lido because it was so much cheaper there and it was only a 10 minute "bus" ride (aka water taxi) to the main island. The main island is then broken up into seven parts: the main part is San Marco--the hottest tourist spot and the MOST expensive place I have ever been. We sat down at a cafe to grab a coffee--9 euros for a cappuccino--we left. Then there is the Santa Croce, Cannaregio, San Polo, Dorsoduro, Castello and Giudecca. The way to get around is to know what direction each part is in and which you want to walk towards. Most the streets are too small and narrow to put on a map, so you just have to know about which way you want to go.
Surprisingly, we didn't get lost that often!
It was a great trip and I loved every moment.
